Mad-Eye Moody teaches well. He turns Malfoy into a ferret for attacking Harry behind his back. Moody teaches Gryffindor the three unforgivable curses: Imperius, Cruciatus, and Avada Kedavra. Hermione founds a group to free house-elves. She requests badges for Harry and Ron. Harry learns to stave against the Imperius Curse as he studies DA.

In late October, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang delegations arrive, and Ron is excited to see Quidditch star Viktor Krum. Harry Potter, Cedric Diggory, Fleur Delacour, and Viktor Krum are selected by the Goblet of Fire on Halloween. Harry’s age causes turmoil. Harry must compete since the Goblet’s choice is final. Gryffindor wins, but Ron is jealous and doesn’t speak to Harry for a while. Harry is irritated that few believe he didn’t put his name in the Goblet of Fire. During the weighing of the wands, Rita Skeeter interviews Harry for a story about the tournament, but instead publishes a mushy essay about Harry’s tragic history.

Hagrid invites Harry during a late-night walk, which reveals the first task: dragons. Sirius’s head appears in the Gryffindor common room fireplace, warning Harry that Karkaroff was a Death Eater and may still be dangerous, and that Moody was the Ministry’s top dark wizard catcher and is probably at Hogwarts for a reason. The next day, Harry warns Cedric about the first job; Moody overhears, commends Harry’s decency, and suggests Harry use his broomstick to pass the dragon. Harry and Hermione practise summoning charms for hours, and on the first task, Harry summons his broomstick, flies past the dragon, and captures the golden egg. Ron and Harry are reunited, making Gryffindor delighted.

Hermione brings Harry and Ron to the kitchens, where they meet Dobby, who is pleased at his release, and Winky, Mr. Crouch’s ex-house-elf. Professor McGonagall announces in class that the Yule Ball is approaching and the champions must choose partners. Harry asks Cho, but she’s already dating Cedric. Hermione has a date but won’t tell who it is; she’s upset when Ron asks her out. Harry and Ron’s Yule Ball partners are the lovely but annoying Patil twins. Ron wears his horrible dress robes to the Christmas dance and spends the night looking at Hermione, Viktor Krum’s date. Harry and Ron leave the ball to go for a walk, where they overhear Hagrid telling Madame Maxime that he is half-giant. Cedric suggests Harry bathe with the golden egg after the ball, but Harry is hesitant. Hermione and Ron are fighting about why she went to the ball with Krum instead of him as Harry returns to Gryffindor Tower.

Hagrid doesn’t teach the next day. Rita Skeeter wrote that his enormous forefathers make him angry and dangerous. Embarrassed, he won’t leave his cabin. Ludo Bagman offers to help Harry with the competition and reveals Mr. Crouch’s absence. Hermione criticises Rita’s articles. Harry, Ron, and Hermione convince Hagrid to return to Hogwarts. Hagrid appreciates their dedication and begs Harry to win. Harry bathes with the egg later. He has an hour to retrieve something precious from the lake. Harry, donning his Invisibility cloak, checks his Marauder’s Map on his way back to his dorm. He drops the golden egg, which screeches. Instantly appear Filch and Snape. Moody shoos away the other men and returns Harry’s egg. Moody wants to borrow the Marauder’s Map, which indicates where everyone is at Hogwarts.

Harry can’t breathe underwater the night before the second task. Dobby awakens him in the morning with gillyweed and sends him to the lake, where the quest begins. The gillyweed gives Harry gills, so he swims effortlessly around the lake and finds Hermione, Ron, Cho, and Fleur’s sister in a merpeople settlement. Harry stays underground until all the champions have rescued their hostages. Fleur doesn’t show, so he returns with her sister and Ron, finishing last but earning good honours for his moral fibre.

Rita Skeeter soon claims Hermione plays with Harry and Krum’s affections. In potions class, three pals read the article. After class, Harry overhears Karkaroff telling Snape about his arm. Harry, Ron, and Hermione meet Sirius Black as Padfoot the next day in Hogsmeade. He tells them Mr. Crouch’s son was condemned as a Death Eater and thinks it odd that Mr. Crouch hasn’t been coming to work or taking the seat saved by his house-elf at the World Cup. Back at Hogwarts, Harry, Ron, and Hermione present Dobby socks. Winky is sad and inebriated and says she’s keeping a secret for her ex-master between hiccups. Hermione receives hate mail for allegedly hurting Harry’s heart.

Mr. Crouch has stunned Krum and vanished when Harry returns with Dumbldore. Harry tries to follow Sirius’s advice to be careful and practise hexes for the third challenge. Harry dreams about Voldemort in Divination class, waking up terrified and clutching his scar. Harry leaves class to tell Dumbledore. As he waits for Dumbledore, he stares into a Pensieve and enters his memories of Death Eater trials, including Ludo Bagman, Karkaroff, and Mr. Crouch’s kid. Dumbledore returns, takes Harry from the memory-world, and warns Voldemort is growing stronger.

Rita Skeeter releases an article about Harry fainting in class and being disturbed on the third task. On task night, Harry and the other three champions enter the maze. Harry and Cedric, the two remaining candidates, arrive towards the trophy at the same time and agree to touch it jointly. The trophy is a portkey that brings the lads to a graveyard, where a hooded stranger kills Cedric and ties up Harry. Wormtail dumps Voldemort’s current form, his father’s ashes, Harry’s blood, and his right hand into a cauldron. Voldemort rises from the cauldron. Voldemort tattoos the Dark Mark on Wormtail’s arm, and Death Eaters surround them. Voldemort reveals his fall and rise to Harry and his Death Eaters, then challenges him to a duel. Harry prepares for death, but he uses the disarming spell just as Voldemort yells “Avada Kedavra!” at him. The two wands’ light connects midair. Voldemort’s prior victims emerge from his wand and shield Harry as the connection is severed, giving him time to take Cedric’s body and touch the trophy, returning to Hogwarts.

Harry returns weak and shaken. Moody brings him into the castle, where he reveals he’s a Death Eater and put Harry’s name in the Goblet and turned it into a portkey. Moody tells Harry that Karkaroff felt his Dark Mark burn and fled. Dumbledore and other teachers surprise Moody and save Harry. Dumbledore tells Harry that Moody’s body is Mr. Crouch’s son Barty, and that he switched by sipping Polyjuice potion every hour. After awhile, Harry recognises Barty Crouch. Snape gives Crouch truth serum, and Crouch reveals how his father sneaked him out of prison and enabled him to live behind an Invisibility cloak, watched by Winky; and how Voldemort returned to find young Crouch. He says he killed his father and brought Harry to Voldemort to restore his power. Then Dumbledore asks Harry to recount what he observed in the graveyard to him and Sirius. Dumbledore tells Harry that Harry and Voldemort’s wands are formed of the identical phoenix feathers, thus one had to regurgitate the other’s spells.

Harry is sent to bed and woken by Dumbledore and Fudge arguing over Voldemort’s increased authority. Fudge is sceptical. He delivers Harry the tournament winnings and goes. Soon the term closes, and at the final meal Dumbledore tells everyone how Voldemort killed Cedric and how the future looks gloomy and requires them to unite. Hermione warns Harry and Ron on the train ride back to London by showing them Rita Skeeter’s animagus form, a bug. Harry gives the Weasley twins his gold to help start their practical joke company and asks them to buy Ron new dress robes. Harry summers with the Dursleys.
